Job Description

Assistant House Manager, Bedford Home

Abilities, LLC | Full-time | $21.50 to $26.88/hr

Who we are

Abilities, LLC has supported adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Warrensburg since 2003. Our mission is to support people in living meaningful lives within their communities. Our homes are small, so you get to really know the people you support. Our values are Integrity, Community, and Empathy, and they guide how we treat each other as much as how we treat the people we serve.

The role

The Assistant House Manager is a working leader. You lead on shift, coach and train DSPs, and keep the household systems running well. You partner with the House Manager to make the ISL a real home for the people who live there and a place where staff feel supported, capable, and like they belong. This role is the next step toward House Manager, and we hire for it expecting you to grow into the next role, with time.

Leadership here is not a title. Your team watches how you handle a hard shift, a mistake, and a tough conversation, and they learn from it. We are looking for someone who leads the way we want everyone to work.

How we expect you to lead

  • Clarity: You tell people what you need, when you need it, and why. Clear is kind, so you do not soften feedback until it disappears.
  • Courage: You have the hard conversation when it needs to happen. You name what is not working and stand by the right decision, even when it is unpopular.
  • Trust: You do what you say you will do. Your team can count on you because you are consistent.
  • Coaching over managing: You teach, ask questions, and grow the people on your team. When someone falls short, you show them what needs to change, what right looks like, and the timeline. When they get there, you close it out and never hold it over their head.
  • Purpose: You connect everyday tasks to the lives of the people we support, so the team never loses sight of why the work matters.

Integrity

  • You do things the right way, not the easy way, whether or not anyone is watching.
  • When something goes wrong, you say so. Owning a mistake is always better than hiding one.
  • Your documentation is accurate, complete, and on time, and you hold your team to the same standard.
  • Coverage runs on policy, not negotiation. You do not make side deals, offer unofficial comp time, or bend attendance and PTO rules to fill a shift.
  • You ask staff to pick up shifts with respect. Guilt, pressure, and personal favors are never part of how we fill a schedule.

Inclusion and belonging

  • You build a team where people belong, not just fit in. You make room for difference, and you notice who is on the edge and pull them in.
  • You protect the rights of the people who live at Bedford, including their visitors, relationships, money, belongings, food, sleep, phones, faith, and choices. There are no house rules here, and no restriction happens outside of due process.
  • You treat the people we support as adults living in their own home, with dignity in every interaction.
  • You recognize good work specifically and often, with at least four individual WorkTango recognitions every month.

Empathy

  • You see the person before the problem, and you assume your team is doing their best with what they have.
  • You can sit with someone in a hard moment without rushing to fix it.
  • You watch for burnout on your team and check in directly when someone is not themselves.
  • You manage your own reactions on hard days, because your team is watching how you handle them.

What you will do

  • Lead and coach DSPs on shift, and model positive support through Tools of Choice with both the people we support and the staff you lead.
  • Train new DSPs in the home and help them build confidence.
  • Support the House Manager with shift coverage and schedule accuracy in WhenToWork.
  • Serve as the on-call contact for Bedford on your rotation, and coordinate or personally cover open shifts.
  • Run the household systems, including medications and refills, documentation, appointment folders, the appointment tracker, at-home medical supplies, adaptive equipment cleaning, and household supplies.
  • Schedule and track emergency drills for the home.
  • Upload documents to SetWorks and keep individual files organized.
  • Support the people who live at Bedford in all of their daily support needs, including hands-on personal care.
  • Step in for the House Manager when needed.

Schedule

  • Weekday shifts 3pm-10pm, Monday-Friday, with alternating M/F off to accommodate for on-call time
  • Weekend on-call on a rotation, released one quarter at a time.
  • Schedules are published two weeks in advance.

Pay and bonuses

  • $21.50 to $26.88/hr, paid weekly every Friday.
  • Finishing the DMH Certified DSP program moves you into the Certified AHM band, starting at $22.79/hr. You also get a $300 bonus and $50 in Recognition Points.
  • Merit increases of up to 5% every year on your hire anniversary.
  • Time and a half on 10 holidays, and double time on Christmas Day.
  • Paid time for on-call work outside your scheduled shifts, on-call bonus, plus an extra $50 for holiday on-call weekends.

Benefits and time off

  • 150 hours of PTO a year, building from your first week and available to use on Day 61.
  • Health insurance starting the first of the month after 60 days, plus dental, vision, and AFLAC.
  • A 401(k) with a safe harbor match of 100% on the first 3% and 50% on the next 2%, once you have 6 months of service.

Why people stay

  • We run on a coaching culture.
  • Your time off is respected.
  • Leaders give specific recognition and praise.

What you need

  • At least one year of experience supporting people with developmental disabilities.
  • Completion of the full DMH Certified DSP program within 90 days of hire.
  • Completion of our required training, including Level I Medication Aide, CPR, First Aid, MANDT, and Tools of Choice.
  • The ability to provide full hands-on care to individuals with developmental disabilities, including bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding, team lifts, helping someone up from the floor, and MANDT holds.
  • Age 18 or older, with a high school diploma or GED.
  • A valid driver's license
  • The ability to pass a background check
