Pain Management Physician - Inpatient Rehabilitation

We are seeking a Pain Management Physician (MD or DO) who wants a collaborative inpatient role focused on helping patients control pain, improve function, and participate more fully in rehabilitation.

- Start Timeline: We are hiring for the right long-term fit and can be flexible on timing. We welcome physicians available immediately as well as those considering a planned transition over the next 12-24 months.
About the Opportunity / A Day in the Life
In this role, you will manage acute and chronic pain for patients receiving inpatient rehabilitation. You will evaluate each patient's medical history, medications, diagnostic findings, functional goals, and rehabilitation progress to develop an individualized pain management plan.
Treatment may include medication management, nonpharmacologic therapies, and strategies coordinated with the patient's rehabilitation plan. You will monitor treatment effectiveness and medication safety while helping patients achieve realistic pain and functional goals.
You'll work closely with internal medicine physicians, rehabilitation clinicians, nursing, and other specialists. When appropriate, you will identify patients who may benefit from interventional pain evaluation, outpatient palliative care, or additional specialty services following discharge.
The role also includes patient and family education, goals-of-care discussions when clinically appropriate, and coordination of safe transitions from the hospital to outpatient care.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive pain assessments, including medical history, examination findings, diagnostic studies, medications, and functional goals.
- Develop individualized multimodal pain management and rehabilitation-focused treatment plans.
- Prescribe and monitor pain medications, including controlled substances when clinically appropriate.
- Evaluate treatment effectiveness, adverse effects, drug interactions, and the need for medication adjustment, tapering, or discontinuation.
- Collaborate with internal medicine and other specialists on conditions affecting pain control, medication safety, and rehabilitation.
- Identify appropriate candidates for interventional pain evaluation, including epidural steroid injections, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation, and joint injections.
- Coordinate appropriate outpatient referrals based on clinical need and patient preference.
- Identify patients who may benefit from outpatient palliative care and support continuity following discharge.
- Initiate goals-of-care and advance care planning discussions when appropriate.
- Educate patients and families about treatment options, realistic pain goals, medication safety, and follow-up needs.
- Complete timely, accurate clinical documentation and communicate recommendations to the interdisciplinary team.
- Support safe discharge planning through medication reconciliation, clear handoffs, and coordination with outpatient clinicians.
Required Qualifications
- MD or DO degree
- Active, unrestricted medical license in the state of practice
- Current DEA registration
- Eligibility for hospital credentialing and privileges
- Clinical experience managing acute and chronic pain, including safe opioid prescribing and multimodal treatment
- Ability to identify appropriate candidates for interventional pain procedures and palliative care services
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, organization, and follow-through
- Commitment to dependable, collaborative, patient-centered care
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in inpatient rehabilitation, pain medicine, or palliative care
Compensation & Contract Structure
Annual compensation is $300,000-$400,000 under a 1099 independent contractor agreement.
Performance may be evaluated using defined metrics established in the agreement, including quality of care, documentation timeliness, responsiveness, productivity, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Compensation within the stated range may reflect performance against applicable contractual metrics.
All clinical referrals and treatment recommendations remain based on patient need, clinical appropriateness, and patient choice.
