Job Description

Warren-Trumbull County Public Library is seeking an engaging, service-oriented Public Service Librarian to join our Community Engagement Division. This is a full-time opportunity for someone passionate about connecting people with information, programs, and resources that strengthen our community.

Position Summary

The Public Service Librarian provides direct public service — including circulation, reference, programming, collection development, outreach, and readers' advisory — to customers of all backgrounds and ages.

What You'll Do

Public Service

  • Provide direct service to the public, including circulation, general and advanced reference, readers' advisory, and technology assistance

Programming & Outreach

  • Develop, prepare, and present programs tailored to the needs and interests of designated age group(s)
  • Instruct the public in the use of library materials and equipment
  • Identify, coordinate, and book external experts and presenters for engaging programs and educational events
  • Create displays and bulletin boards
  • Present library services and programs to individuals and groups
  • Participate in outreach activities as assigned
  • Stay current on programming best practices and trends

Library Operations

  • Answer phones, respond to inquiries, and direct calls
  • Assist in opening and closing service points and/or the building
  • Count money and balance a cash drawer
  • Apply and enforce library policies
  • Maintain the physical appearance of the location
  • Maintain accurate library records and statistics
  • May serve as a key point of escalation in the absence of a library or division manager

Collection Development

  • Manage a designated area of the Library's collection — monitoring needs, selecting age-appropriate materials, and leading collection maintenance and evaluation

Professional Ethics & Development

  • Maintain confidentiality of library user transactions and records
  • Uphold the ALA Code of Ethics, including user privacy, confidentiality, and intellectual freedom
  • Participate in ongoing professional development; may serve on library committees

What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program
  • Prior experience in a similar public service role
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to all library locations as needed
  • Experience working with the desired age group(s)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a public library
  • Experience creating and facilitating age-appropriate library programming and outreach

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to tailor information to a user's needs
  • Comfort learning and using a range of computer programs and systems; basic troubleshooting skills
  • Accuracy handling financial transactions and maintaining records
  • A warm, welcoming demeanor and genuine commitment to patron service
  • Ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects, and work independently

Compensation

  • Starting salary: $22.12/hour
  • Full-time position
