Job Description
Warren-Trumbull County Public Library is seeking a friendly, service-minded Public Service Assistant to join our Teen Services Division in Warren. This is a full-time opportunity for someone who enjoys helping the public, staying active on the floor, and supporting the day-to-day operations that keep the library running smoothly.
Position Summary
The Public Service Assistant provides public service — including circulation, general reference, and readers' advisory — to library customers.
What You'll Do
Circulation Operations
- Process Search Ohio and other interlibrary loan requests; sort, shelve, and read shelves for accuracy
- Pull holds and collection lists; register borrowers and enter registration data
- Check materials in and out, including emptying book drops; collect payments
- Clean, inspect, and perform minor repairs on incoming materials
General Reference & Readers' Advisory
- Create displays and bulletin boards
- Provide general information about library services, directing users to other divisions or locations as needed
- Place holds; answer general reference and readers' advisory questions, referring advanced questions to librarians and associates as appropriate
Technology Assistance
- Support public use of photocopiers, printing, faxing, and scanning services
- Assist users with public computers and catalog terminals; troubleshoot minor issues and escalate as needed
- Help users navigate library apps, websites, platforms, and databases across devices
Library Operations
- Answer phones, handle cash drawer, and assist with opening/closing duties
- Apply library policies and maintain accurate records and statistics
Library Initiatives
- May assist with program preparation, facilitation, and registration
- May support community outreach and serve on library committees
Professional Ethics
- Maintain patron confidentiality and uphold the ALA Code of Ethics
What You'll Bring
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred
- Customer service experience highly desirable
Skills & Abilities
- Strong communication and analytical skills tailored to user needs
- Comfort learning new systems and basic tech troubleshooting
- Accuracy with financial transactions and recordkeeping
- Warm, welcoming demeanor and attention to detail
- Ability to engage in ongoing continuing education relevant to the role
Compensation
- Starting salary: $14.24/hour
- Full-time position
