Position Overview:

The Town of Avon, Colorado, is accepting applications for a Public Works Operator II

The Public Works Operator II is responsible for operating, maintaining heavy and small equipment, machines, and hand tools to assist with sustaining Town roads and bridges, storm water infrastructure, parks, open space, grounds, green belts, and streetscape structure. In addition to offering assistance with Special Events programs, this position assists with painting and set-up of fields for Recreation programs.

Essential Functions:

  1. Operates a variety of gasoline or diesel heavy and small equipment, such as tractors, sweepers, dump 
    trucks, graders, loaders, aerial trucks, skid steers, ride mowers, 4x4 pickup trucks, Tool cats, ATVs, club 
    cars, power tools, and hand tools (e.g. drills, weed trimmers, shovels, picks etc.)
  2. Performs routine pre and post checks and minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment prior to use, 
    emergency repairs if necessary, and coordinates with fleet maintenance mechanics when major repairs 
    are needed
  3. Plows and clears snow and ice from streets, sidewalks, paths, bus stops, and parking lots. Sands and 
    de-ices slippery surfaces as needed
  4. Sweeps and cleans roadways, sidewalks, and trails and cleans and maintains culverts, ditches, and 
    shoulders
  5. Provides minor asphalt and concrete re-construction and patching of roadways, sidewalks, curbs, and 
    gutters to seal cracks, fill potholes, and repairs brick pavers
  6. Cleans and flushes manhole catch basins, and storm sewer pipelines
  7. Establishes appropriate barricades, warning devices, and equipment replacement and provides flagging 
    for temporary traffic control, as needed, to maintain a safe work area (e.g. special events, accidents, 
    work areas)
  8. Operates the sign program producing and installing a variety of new and replacement road and town 
    signs
  9. Responds to accidents involving damaged light poles and assists electrician with replacing light poles 
    and lamps
  10. Maintains park facilities, holiday lights, ice skating surface, turf, athletic fields, irrigations systems, 
    landscaping and trees
  11. Removes refuse from receptacles and manually picks up trash in park and other public areas daily
  12. Grades and cleans ditches, culverts and natural water courses, load, haul, and stockpile sand, gravel, 
    brush and other materials
  13. Patches, seals asphalt and concrete roadways, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; repair brick pavers; fill 
    potholes; locate, analyze, and suggest remedies to repair pavement problems
  14. Flush and clean manhole catch basins and storm sewer pipelines
  15. Assists with right-of-way and road cut permits, inspections, and field activities and traffic control in 
    support of the Town’s special events

Other Duties and Functions: 
1. Provides labor and support for special events  


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 
1. Knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local rules, regulations, ordinances and other regulatory 
standards 
2. Knowledge of policies, procedures, practices, and equipment associated with snow removal and parks 
and grounds maintenance including traffic controls, signage, and devices in fixed and moving work sites 
(e.g., MUTCD, ASHTO annual), hazards related to fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and winter deicers 
3. Working knowledge of snow removal methods, procedures, and equipment 
4. Knowledge of variety of plants, trees shrubs, and turf botanical health requirements, growing zones, 
and watering and nutrient needs, and working knowledge of chemical spraying and calibration methods 
5. Knowledge in sign fabrication, plowing, sanding, hauling, and traffic control 
6. Skilled in the use of heavy and small equipment and power and hand tools 
7. Ability to recognize and solve problems, listen, communicate, and follow directions in writing  
8. Ability to handle public complaints or requests in a cooperative manner 
9. Ability to work independently under limited supervision  
10. Ability to interpret manuals, catalogues, and shop drawings related to the position 
11. Work may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and as needed, overtime and on-call 
to respond to local emergencies or provide mutual aid to the countywide region 
12. Working knowledge and ability using a desktop computer and the following software: MS Outlook, MS 
Excel, MS Word 
13. Ability to perform duties in conjunction with other divisions through cross-training in fleet, facilities, and 
recreation maintenance 
14. Ability to train others in heavy / small equipment, safety procedures, CDL, sign fabrication, plowing, 
sanding, hauling, traffic control and all other maintenance 
15. Ability to communicate in English effectively both verbally and in writing; Spanish is considered a plus 
16. Ability to operate a Town vehicle safely 

17. Requires possession of Colorado driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire 
18. Ability to obtain Heavy Equipment Training Certifications: level 1 Back-hoe, front-end loader 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma, or equivalent (GED) with a minimum of five (5) 
years of experience in several of the desirable skills and abilities listed above, which demonstrates proficiency 
in the operation of heavy equipment in excess of five (5) tons, snow removal, chemical and calibration 
methods. CDL required. Flagger Certification and a strong safety record preferred. Any equivalent 
combination of experience and education will be considered. 


Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and may be 
subject to random, unannounced drug and alcohol testing as outlined in the Town’s Drug & Alcohol Policy 
and ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.
