Ophthalmic Technician – Central Region

Austin (38th Street) & Bastrop

Austin Retina Associates is hiring a compassionate, dependable Ophthalmic Technician to support our Central Region clinics in Austin and Bastrop.

You’ll work alongside physicians and clinical team members to provide exceptional retina care and help preserve patients’ vision. No ophthalmic experience is required—we provide comprehensive training for motivated candidates who are eager to learn and make a meaningful difference.

This position requires regular travel between clinics. Some days may include early mornings, extended hours, or overtime based on clinic and physician schedules.

What You’ll Do

As an Ophthalmic Technician, you’ll help guide patients through their visits, gather critical clinical information, perform diagnostic testing, and assist physicians with examinations and procedures.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Triaging patients and accurately documenting their medical histories
  • Identifying each patient’s chief complaint
  • Performing preliminary testing, including visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, intraocular pressure, pupil checks, ocular motility, dilation, and blood pressure
  • Performing macular OCT scans and other retinal imaging
  • Preparing examination rooms and patient charts
  • Assisting physicians with in-office treatments and clinical procedures
  • Documenting chart notes clearly and accurately
  • Communicating with physicians, team leaders, and coworkers to support efficient patient care
  • Explaining each stage of the visit to patients with clarity, compassion, and professionalism
  • Providing patient education before and after the physician examination
  • Assisting with clinical-trial recruitment when opportunities are available
  • Supporting clinic operations at assigned and remote locations
  • Performing other duties as assigned

  • Holds a valid U.S. driver’s license with an unrestricted and satisfactory driving record
  • Is willing to share responsibility for driving a company vehicle on day trips
  • Can travel between Central Region clinics and occasionally assist other regions

Preferred Qualifications

These qualifications are helpful but not required:

  • Experience in a busy optometry, ophthalmology, or retina clinic
  • COA, COT, or COMT certification
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish
  • Proven ability to build positive working relationships in a fast-paced or high-stress environment

Travel and Scheduling

  • Regular travel between clinic locations is required
  • Company transportation is provided when applicable
  • Mileage is reimbursed when an employee is authorized to use a personal vehicle
  • No overnight travel is expected
  • Schedules vary based on clinic location, assigned physician, and operational needs
  • Typical workdays are Monday through Friday
  • Occasional weekend work may be required
  • Early mornings, later days, irregular hours, and overtime may occur

  • FLSA non-exempt
  • Eligible for overtime

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

  • Sit for up to four hours per day
  • Stand and walk for extended periods
  • Communicate in person and by telephone
  • Use hands to handle objects, operate controls, and complete computer-based tasks
  • Reach, stoop, kneel, bend, and crouch
  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds
  • Frequently view diagnostic images and multiple computer screens
  • Perform work requiring close and distance vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus
